Gas detection tubes (also known as Colorimetric tubes) are a simple yet reliable method for the short-term, spot sampling of gases and vapours in the air. These tubes provide a quick and accurate means of detecting a wide range of hazardous substances, including toxic gases, chemical vapours, and other airborne contaminants.
Gas detector tubes work on the principle of chemical reaction. Each glass tube is filled with a reagent that changes colour when it comes into contact with a specific gas. The intensity of the colour change indicates the concentration of the gas, which can be easily read on a scale marked on the tube. To use, a hand pump draws a precise volume of air through the tube, allowing for a straightforward and immediate measurement without the need for complex electronics or calibration.
No calibration is required, making them versatile and economical. They are ideal for spot-checking, leak detection, and periodic air quality assessments, particularly in situations where electronic gas detectors might be impractical, such as in remote locations or confined spaces. However, note that detector tubes are designed for spot checking and will not detect a change in a concentration of gas, making them unsuitable for certain applications such as personal exposure monitoring.
Our range includes Gastec and Honeywell gas detection tubes.
